Eidos – Augmented Reality (not just visuals)
May 6, 2013Projection mapping is really just a subset of a larger beast called augmented reality. Augmented Reality is the concept of altering our sensory perceptions in some way, usually such that the virtual and physical are combined. Most effort is focused onto augmented our visual perception (e.g. through projection mapping).
Eidos is a super pretty video demonstrating an entire spectrum of augmented sensory perception. Check it out!

IllumiRoom: Peripheral Projected Illusions for Interactive Experiences
January 15, 2013
Hi Internet,
Here is a more ‘researchy’ projection mapping project done by myself, Brett Jones (1/2 of Augmented Engineering).
This proof-of-concept prototype uses a lot of the ideas that we’ve seen in projection mapping. However, it dynamically adapts to the appearance and geometry of the room (captured by Kinect). While the video has a “Hollywood” touch, it shows the actual real-time prototype (no special effects added in post-production).
I can’t go into details yet (more to come at CHI in April).
Here is the official article.

Goofy’s Paint ‘n’ Play House
December 8, 2012Here are a couple videos out of Disney Tokyo (one looks like the official release and the other is a first person view):
A couple of the folks on this piece were also involved with “The Legend of Jack Sparrow” (which if you haven’t seen, hit the jump, it’s very cool). Yet another congrats on the awesome stuff coming out Imagineering!

Augmented Reality Store Windows
December 6, 2012Clever.
Second Story created an interactive store front window with a Kinect and a transparent display.

Walt Disney Projection Mapping Experience
December 5, 2012
Walt Disney World just opened “The Legend of Captain Jack Sparrow.” This is definitely the most elaborate and immersive projection mapping experience in a theme park.
(We used to work at Walt Disney Imagineering with the team that pulled this off. Congrats guys, it looks great.)

White Kanga – Interactive Kinetic Mapping
November 30, 2012White Kanga has released a series of videos about their “Interactive Kinetic Mapping.” They have created a system for projection mapping onto a rotatable sculpture.

Projection Mapping Central
November 27, 2012We are pleased to announce the launch of a new website for the projection mapping community, Projection Mapping Central. It is a free community resource for all things related to projection mapping. Projection Mapping Central is a compendium of information about projection mapping software, hardware, tutorials, design companies, festivals and more.
It is a place where advertisers and event organizers can find a firm to make their dreams a reality. It is a place where a beginner can figure out how to “map”, or an expert can keep up to date with the latest tools.
If you are an artist, programmer, advertiser or event organizer, welcome.

NuFormer Behind the Scenes
November 14, 2012A nice behind the scenes look at NuFormer’s BMW projection mapping. Looks like they created video content using standard tools (e.g. After Effects) then created a custom Unity program to display the video and warp the image to be perspectively correct for a user (who is tracked with the Kinect).
