Frieder Weiss

December 27, 2008

Frieder Weiss is a German “software artist” that specializes in software for dance performances and installations. He is the former co-director of the Palindrome Intermedia Performance Group. He has helped to create a number of interactive dance pieces featuring interaction between dancer and light. Most pieces utilize IR cameras for motion capture with blob detection and standard projectors for content display. The IR cameras are mounted above the dancer and the dancer must perform directly on the projection surface.

Weiss has authored software to enable widespread use of IR blob tracking for dance called EyeCon, which offers a 30 day free trial.

One of Weiss’ most famous works is Glow, a collaboration with the dance company Chunky Move.
